Paradores are mainly restored historic monuments converted into modern hotels with great care. These are off a high standard (between 3 and 5 star) but not cheap.
Balneario are spas like expensive hotels which offer a range of treatments.
Hostales and pensiones are a more modest way to holiday. They are still starred and can represent good value for money.
Fondas or Casas de huespedes is what we would call a guesthouse - a simple bed and washbasin. These are usually only in older areas of town.
Farmhouses and casa rurales offer a chance to view rural life without sacrificing comforts of a hotel.
Wayside Inns are useful on a long drive for a meal and bed for the evening.
Spain boasts hundreds of registered campsites to park a caravan on or pitch a tent. Camping is good value as many sites offer electric, water, showers, shop, restaurants, launderette, pool, telephone, post box first aid, bars and sports facilities! Off-site camping is allowed with the permission of the land owner but not on mountains or beaches.
Holiday rental is popular in Spain. Properties are either built specifically for the purpose of self catering holiday let or are rented from the owners whilst they are not using it. Rustic country houses and villas with private pools are also available. These and the more basic apartments can be found advertising on numerous websites.
