Spain boasts eleven national parks and has over two hundred nature reserves protecting a vast array of areas.
The two national parks in the North of Spain are home to some of the countries most spectacular scenery. The National Park of the Picos has become Europe's largest and is a great venue for caving, hiking and climbing. Situated high in the Pyrenees the National Park of Ordessa y Monte Perdido is only accessible to those on foot and in autumn and winter snow can make it completely inaccessible to specialist climbers.
Donana National Park is an enormous marsh area in the wetlands and covers more than 185,000 acres. Wildlife is abundant here and in 1969 the area was protected in order to sustain this.
The Canary Islands are home to three National Parks: La Palma has Caldera de Taberiente a wood surrounded volcanic crater; Tenerife is home to Mount Teide and Lanzarote is where you will find Timanfaya National Park an area of stunning lava fields with a lunar feel. Cabera an island off the coast of Mallorca is entirely a national park and has rare seabirds, plants and reptiles.
