Madrid

Madrid is a bustling city, full of life, activity, and energy. As the capital of Spain, Madrid is a city of great cultural and political importance; it sits (literally) at the center of this large country. It has been the capital of Spain since 1562 and is relatively young in comparison to many of Spain's cities. The international airport of Madrid is Barajas. As the highest capital in Europe, Madrid is hot in summer and freezing in winter, with temperate springs and autumns.

Madrid is Spain's business centre as well as the headquarters for its government. More of a working city than a tourist attraction it does however have the largest density of bars and restaurants per square meter in Europe, and is famed for its vibrant nightlife. Madrid is also home to some of the greatest artworks of the modern world and is a very popular city for bullfighting; it is also famous for its lively and exciting festivals, concerts and opera. If you love to party, visit during May for Madrid's biggest fiesta. The city boasts three great art museums: the Museo del Prado, Museo Thyssen- Bornemisza and the newly added Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. The livelier visitors will love Madrid's Amusement Park and the Warner Bros-Madrid Theme Park.

Madrid's extensive Metro and Public Bus Systems provide an efficient and cheap way of getting around the city. A European capital that brings together tradition and modernity, the centre of Madrid is relatively easy to navigate on foot, especially the old town. Given that Madrid is a metropolis of about 5 million people, its centre, where many objects of interest are located, is relatively compact. The main square is known as Plaza Mayor and is the best spot in the city to grab a cup of coffee and people watch. Madrid is a shopper's paradise and is also a good place to buy antiques. Madrid is Spain's tapas capital - - tapas just don't get any better.
